7 Basic Chiropractic FAQ

1. What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health science that offers natural care, i.e. without medication or surgery. It helps you regain your full vital potential through your body’s innate ability to adapt and heal itself.

The term comes from the Greek kheir, which means “hand” and praktikos which means “putting into action”. Thus chiropractic is “putting into action by hand”.

The chiropractor works essentially using his hands.

2. Is it reasonable to have an adjustment during pregnancy?

Yes, several studies have shown that pregnant women under the care of a chiropractor experience less discomfort during pregnancy and a shorter working day.

Not to mention frequent sciatica in the last months of pregnancy, more and more women are having difficulty giving birth. One of the main reasons for this is a poorly balanced pelvis!

The pelvis’s excellent mobility is one of the primary keys to good birth; it is essential to consult your chiropractor at least as frequently as your gynaecologist.

3. I have had a herniated disc operated on, and it still hurts, can the chiro do anything for me?

Rest assured, 9 out of 10 herniated discs operated on should never have been operated on because they have little to do with the patient’s symptoms. Yours is undoubtedly one of them. So consult a chiropractor as soon as possible, there is a good chance that he will find the real cause of your pain. If the reason is indeed at the herniated disc level and if it is not ruptured, there are specific Chiropractic techniques without rotation that allow a chiropractic adjustment that is often life-saving.

4. I am no longer in pain, but my chiro tells me that I should continue to come every month. What do you think about it?

If you are one of those who prefer to wait for a toothache to see their dentist and who prefer pain to well-being, feel free to wait until you are stuck again to have your adjustment.

However, remember that chiropractic’s primary goal is not to relieve pain, but to keep the joints at an optimal level of functioning to avoid recurrences. So if he thinks you need to see him every month, trust him, he knows what he’s talking about.

5. How often can you get adjusted?

There is no simple answer to this question. Not everyone has the same back. Some people are okay with having their back adjusted once or twice a year, and others have had so many badly treated problems in the past that they need it every month. Only the chiropractor who follows you and knows your problem can answer this question precisely.

6. My doctor told me that if I am in pain, it is because of arthrosis and that there is nothing I can do about it. What do you think about this?

He is right; there is nothing he can do for you. But don’t be discouraged, it’s generally not the arthrosis that causes the pain, but the subluxations (which have allowed arthrosis to evolve). Thank your doctor for admitting this to you and make an appointment with a Chiropractor.

7. Why do I have to come back, and if I feel well?

Often the best results are not felt at the first visit. There is nothing more frustrating for a chiro to see a patient only once. If your condition is several months or even years old, your body will initially tend to return to its previous state. You need to give it a little help and time to reorganize itself. It is necessary to repeat the correction to improve joint quality.

Over time, scar tissue forms around the discs, joints and spinal nerves that come out of them: if you neglect your spine, you will probably have the spine of a 70-year-old at the age of 40. On the other hand, if you come back from time to time and take charge of your health, the chiro will keep your health in good condition that you wouldn’t have thought it could!
